Part 13 Chapter 10 Border
While the army of the northern general, Duke Sugimoto, is clinging to the border, the knights of Yamato are patrolling along the border in the dim dusk.
All of them are knights of the cavalry gun corps.
I was riding around on horseback checking the state of the border fence.
Duke Sugimoto also urgently returned to Yamato with Mitsuki and the others in a wyvern along with Grand Duke Ijuwin, the Central General, and Duke Saito, the Royal Guards General, and returned to his own army's command area.
Immediately, Grand Duke Ijuwin departed for the northern border as a rearguard and took up position behind Duke Sugimoto.
Furthermore, Duke Saito of the royal guard was also stationed behind them so that he could follow up at any time.
The border itself was already completely blocked off by something like a fence, and the knights were patrolling it.
Even with a telescope, you can easily see if the fence is broken, so there are buildings made of watchtowers at certain distances, and there is currently no evidence that the fence has been broken.
The fence itself has a simple structure, but is sturdy, and traps containing explosives are set up around the fence.
They were regularly maintained and placed at different points on the terrain.
The fence was only used to check for intruders.
And Yamato's knights are regularly patrolling the area, including managing them.
"There's no movement today either."
Said the captain leading the knights on horseback.
“It seems that Yuuki-sama, the child of the end of the apocalypse, has returned, and there are even Bakuryuuou Gou-oh and Leviathan, so I don’t think they will attack.”
I replied as if the knight chasing the captain was ridiculous.
“Indeed, I think so.”
The other knights also answered.
"...That's strange."
The captain stopped running his horse and looked at the nearest observation tower.
"What's wrong?"
asked a fellow knight.
``At the observation tower, someone always has to watch the fence, but no one comes out and it's dark and there aren't any lights on.''
The captain took the matchlock gun he had prepared for his horse and loaded it with Hayate and Karka.
Seeing this, the knights panicked and prepared their matchlock guns.
Because a detonator could not be created, it is still a matchlock gun, but by applying magical research, the gun itself and gunpowder were strengthened, making it twice as powerful as a Japanese matchlock gun.
It's much more difficult to operate on horseback than in the other world because of the recoil, but what makes our cavalry artillery so superior is that they have the skill to handle it.
As the knights cautiously approached on horseback, a bowgun was suddenly fired at them from behind the turret.
We fire back immediately, but there are a lot of enemies.
"Where did you come from?"
An enemy soldier who was wearing a raincoat-like cloth was shot by a matchlock gun and fell down, and the raincoat-like cloth came off and he was revealed.
It wasn't a human, it was an ugly dwarf, but it had a sturdy body.
"It's Dverk! It's Dverk the dark fairy! They dug a hole and came from underground!"
The knight who saw that figure cried out.
The captain took a small matchlock gun attached to a horse wrapped neatly in paper and fired it upwards.
It looked like a kind of signal bomb, and while emitting yellow smoke, it made a beeping sound and bloomed like fireworks in the sky.
After that, the knights died while being shot by a large number of Dverk.
