Episode 158: Strengthening the military
Now that we have strengthened the research department and agriculture-related areas, the next step is military-related ones.
So I called General Durva.
“I heard you called me?”
General Durva came to the office immediately after I called, and I started talking.
"How's the army doing?"
``Currently, I am dispersed to various places, and I am responsible for maintaining public order there.Sometimes, I take my companions on patrol and enforce discipline.''
“A while ago, there was a rumor that the Rocha region was going to start things with the Empire. Didn't anyone defect?”
"About 100 people came out. However, there are many people who have held grudges against the Empire since the days when Rocha was a country. Even if there is really a war with the Empire, no more people will leave. I guess.”
"Haha. That's just a rumor, they don't really fight against the Empire."
I laughed at the idea, thinking that General Durva would fight against the Empire.
After that, I decided to bring up another topic.
“General Durva is the only ‘general’ in Rocha’s army, but isn’t that a problem?”
"Prince Milimos. Weren't you the one who sent Zvorenk, who was appointed as the new general, to the Feronya region?"
“I guess it can’t be helped. Brother Futtero has forced me to hire a general who is knowledgeable about military affairs. Besides, I can’t send General Durva, who is one of the backbones of the Roccia region. ”
``I feel that this is an exaggerated accolade.''
When General Durva politely thanked me, I thought to myself with a wry smile, ``I'm not a bigot.''
"In any case, it's a problem if there's only one person commanding the army. Especially if that one person is frequently traveling around, the defense of the central capital may become neglected."
"Haha, just kidding. If a commotion breaks out in this central capital, wouldn't it be enough if Prince Milimos took command?"
"Please don't make me do any more work. I've given up on the amount of work I have to do, and it's a good thing we're living in a time of peace. We're trying to train civil servants."
In fact, it is not good for the lord to be busy with paperwork forever.
So, I'm in the process of creating a system to gather civil servants, train them, give them authority, and reduce my workload.
After gaining the perspective of human resources education, I realized that the military also needed human resources education, which led to me calling General Durva.
"So, I would like to appoint someone as the new general so that I can be more comfortable in case of an emergency. Is there anyone good?"
"Now then, it's hard to imagine someone as knowledgeable about unit operations as Zvorenk."
"It doesn't have to be at this point. Is there anyone you can look to for growth?"
"If that's the case, I'm sure there are a few people in mind."
"Then, train those people as general candidates. When they grow up to the point where they can meet General Durva's standards, I will appoint them as generals at that time."
"I understand. I will raise him strictly so that he can live up to Prince Milimos' expectations."
I'm relieved that General Durva has agreed to this, knowing that the quality of the commander will improve.
"That's right. Farmland reclamation will begin soon, and the soldiers will be asked to build a reservoir, so I'll let everyone know."
"That's good. Let's say that when building a reservoir, we'll have a general candidate command the troops to gauge their qualifications."
"I'll leave it to you to decide how to make it."
Seeing General Durva's expression of joy, I decided to offer my condolences to the soldiers and general candidates in my heart.
“That’s all for me, but does the military have any requests for me?”
"There is enough food and equipment. There are no signs of rebellion among the local powerful clans, and there are no signs of conflict - nothing in particular."
"Really?"
“Speaking of my desires, I would appreciate it if you would give me more luxury items.”
"Do you mean alcohol or cigarettes?"
"We are very happy with alcohol. However, we prefer sweets over cigarettes. Fruit wines and dried fruits imported from forest areas are good."
I tilt my head at the unexpected answer.
"Some of Nonette's soldiers smoked, but do Roccia's soldiers hate smoking?"
"The people of Roccia often work in blacksmiths and mines, and the smoke from both blacksmiths and mines is considered harmful."
The main causes of smoke during blacksmithing work are the evaporation of harmful metals and the incomplete combustion of poor quality charcoal.
If smoke occurs in a mine, even if the smoke itself is not harmful, there is a risk of catching fire or suffocation.
In either case, smoke is a signal that life is in danger.
That's probably why the people of Roccia have an aversion to smoke itself, and don't want to smoke.
On the contrary, sweets are a source of energy that keeps your body moving.
Work in blacksmiths and mines is physical labor, so the body always wants to take in good energy.
Because of that, the people of Rocha probably started liking sweet things.
Sake is made by soaking sweets in water and fermenting them. Maybe it's because it's originally a sweet thing that I like it.
"Okay. I'll try to give you more flexibility on luxury items. I have enough income to do that."
"If luxury items can be enjoyed easily, soldiers' command will improve."
"It's okay to have fun, but please don't disturb public morals."
"I'm aware of that. If you issue a rule to take away luxury items as a penalty, the soldiers won't do anything bad."
Let's leave the soldiers to General Durva.
"That's all the requirements I called for. Thank you for going out of your way."
"No. The lord of this land is Prince Milimos."
General Durva gave a quick salute and walked out of the office with a brisk gesture.
